Reared on a ranch near Coleman, Tx. James started drawing and painting at an early age. Later he worked cattle and sheep, rode and trained horses, drove a tractor, built fences and hunted for arrowheads. He learned to appreciate the subtleties of nature.
A sculpture starts out as sketches of the idea on paper and then to a small three dimensional model in clay. The clay allows him to modify the design to a near final form. Working on the stone with hammer and chisel and some power tools, he roughs out the shape. He also uses pneumatic chisels and then rasps, riffler files and finally sandpaper to achieve a finish surface. The stone dictates the final finish although James tries to get a finish that the observer wants to touch. He has used Marble, Alabaster, Lime-stone, Travertine, Onyx and other stones. He has also reproduced his stone sculpture in cast bronze.
